April 07, 2023: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s dream project to build homes for the poor on land freed from the clutches of mafia in state has now started to bear fruit. An example of the same are the flats constructed on the land illegally grabbed by mafia-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed in city west assembly constituency area of Prayagraj. The CM had laid foundation of the first pilot project of housing allotment to poor on mafia land in UP in December 2021. The allotment of these flats to the poor is all set to begin in the month of May this year.

76 flats built for the poor on land freed from mafia’s possession

UP CM Yogi Adityanath’s strict working has become a model of good governance across the country for stern strict action against mafia and criminals. In Uttar Pradesh, much in contrary to mafia-raj which prevailed during the tenure of previous government, leading to innumerable cases of land grabbing by mafia in different parts of state, action against illegal constructions and land grabbed by the mafia in Yogi government has decimated the mafia rule.

The pilot project started by the Yogi government to make homes for the poor by freeing the illegally occupied land of Mafia Atiq Ahmed in Prayagraj has now started to bear fruit. According to Ajit Singh, Secretary of Prayagraj Development Authority (PDA), a total of 76 flats for the poor have been constructed on 1731 square meters of land vacated from the possession of Mafia Atiq Ahmed in Lukerganj locality of the city. Their allocation will be started to the poor from next month.

Fully equipped flats prepared at a cost of Rs 458.88 lakhs

On December 26, 2021, UP CM Yogi Adityanath had performed Bhoomi Pujan for construction of houses for the poor on land freed from illegal possession of Mafia Atiq Ahmed, creating a record of sorts in UP politics, where a serving CM took pledge to build houses for poor on land grabbed by mafia. Under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, 76 flats have been constructed at a cost of Rs 458.88 lakhs. Roughly, the cost of one flat is estimated to be around Rs 6 lakh, of which Central government would bear Rs 1.5 lakh while the state government’s contribution would be Rs 1 lakh. Hence the cost of flat to be borne by the beneficiary will be Rs 3.50 lakh.

Long queue to buy flats on land freed from mafia

According to PDA Secretary Ajit Singh, 6030 people have applied to buy 76 flats constructed on1731 square meters of land vacated from the possession of Mafia Atiq Ahmed in Lukerganj locality of the city. The four-storey building has facilities like parking, community hall and solar lights besides proper arrangements have also been made to ensure greenery around the building to maintain environmental standards.
