Referring to the warning issued by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath that miscreants harming daughters in state would lose their hands and legs, member of All India Congress Committee (AICC) and four time MLA Anugrah Narayan Singh said that the UP CM should begin implementing the warning with the three rape accused in the IIT-BHU gang rape of a BTech student, with two of the accused already released on bail on Sunday.

In an interview with talktoday.in, Singh said mere announcements would not help check the heinous crime. “Rape and murder over the years have become more rampant as offenders go scot free, often enjoying political clout and money power. If the UP CM is serious about his warning then he should immediately implement the same with the two of the three accused, already out on bail in the IIT-BHU gang rape case. The UP police had investigated the crime and found the three guilty of the offence after which they were sent to jail. The UP CM should believe in its police investigation and cite an example that what he says, he means it,” added Singh.

Singh further said that it was not the first time that UP saw its daughters suffer at the hands of criminals after 2017, be it Hathras, Chitrakoot, IIT-BHU gangrape, etc. “Though official figures show a decline in number of heinous crime including rape cases in state, but the daily reports reveal something else,” he further added.

It may be mentioned that the three rape accused in the IIT-BHU gangrape case had been found to have connect with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Opposition parties had targeted the Uttar Pradesh government after two of the three accused in the IIT-BHU gangrape case were released on bail recently, saying that it exposed the hypocrisy of the BJP-led dispensation’s claims about women’s security.

In a post on X, Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav had shared a video which claimed that the accused were granted bail due to the state government’s weak perusal of the case.

Congress on its official handle on X had posted, “After the gangrape, these BJP IT Cell members were sent to Madhya Pradesh to campaign for the BJP. Everyone knows that these BJP IT Cell members who gang-raped the woman are very important in their party. There are pictures of them with Modi, Yogi (Adityanath), J P Nadda and other senior BJP leaders”.

“Pehle Sanskaar, Phir Prahaar”: Puneet Verma

Vishwa Hindu Parishad’s former Pranth Upadhyaksh (Kashi pranth) Puneet Verma welcoming the stern warning issued by UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for miscreants harming daughters, said that such a step was the need of the hour. “The fear of law over the years had gone, largely due to political patronage ensured to anti social elements by previous governments which had worsened the situation. Since firebrand BJP leader Yogi Adityanath took over the reins of state, mafia and repeat offenders have disappeared to a large extent. The present condition of state is safer for women and girls, unlike before 2017. If those having lost ‘Sanskaar’ and had turned into animals, ‘Prahaar’ was the only alternative,” he added.

As per the VHP veteran, data of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) itself testified that UP recorded a decline in serious crimes such as rape and murder in 2021. The state ranked 23rd in rape with 2845 cases and 24th in murder with 3,717 cases among 28 states and 8 union territories.

“The gory rape and murder incident of the 31-year-old doctor in Kolkatta is a proof of worsening security of women in country. In such a situation, the UP CM is the only to take such a stand for ensuring safety of women which should be welcomed instead of being criticized. Such issues should not be politicized,” he added.
