A woman was taken into custody after she allegedly tried to approach Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee with a knife near her Kalighat residence on Tuesday evening.

According to TMC MP Dola Sen, the incident occurred around 6 pm when she was accompanying Mamata Banerjee and party leader Vaishwanar Chattopadhyay to the Kalighat Milan Sangha Durga Puja pandal. Sen alleged that a woman, identified as Tannishtha Saha, suddenly called out to Mamata as “Pisi” and ran towards her.

Sen claimed that the woman appeared to be intoxicated and attempted to lunge at Mamata Banerjee while verbally abusing her. She further alleged that the woman was carrying a knife. After the incident, the woman reportedly lay down on the road and continued shouting.

The MP said the woman claimed to be both a civic volunteer and Mamata Banerjee’s niece. Sen informed two police personnel present at the spot about the incident. However, she alleged that they said they were state police personnel and could not intervene because the area was under the jurisdiction of Kolkata Police.

Following the incident, the woman was taken into custody. Dola Sen has lodged a formal complaint with the officer-in-charge of Kalighat Police Station through email. Raising concerns over Mamata Banerjee’s security, she said that if a three-time chief minister could face such a threat, questions must be asked about the security arrangements in place.
