The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to modernise its 1033 National Highway Helpline with advanced technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), real-time location tracking and smart emergency-response systems, to deliver faster and more efficient assistance to highway users across the country.

The upgraded platform aims to improve the speed and accuracy of emergency response by enabling the helpline to identify callers’ locations in real time, understand conversations in multiple Indian languages and dispatch the appropriate assistance more quickly. While technology will play a larger role, human operators will continue to handle critical situations where judgement and decision-making are essential.

24×7 Assistance for Highway Users

Launched in 2018, the 1033 Helpline operates round the clock and provides support to National Highway users for medical emergencies, vehicle breakdowns, ambulance, crane and patrol vehicle assistance, toll plaza-related complaints, FASTag issues and other travel-related problems on National Highways.

The helpline currently covers more than 1.46 lakh kilometres of National Highways and handles approximately 15,000 calls daily. It also offers assistance in multiple languages.

Key Features of the Next-Generation 1033 Platform

According to NHAI, the upgraded system is expected to deliver several improvements:

Faster Response: Enhanced call-management systems will enable quicker processing of requests and faster deployment of assistance.

Real-Time Location Tracking: Automatic location identification will help emergency teams reach stranded motorists and accident sites more efficiently.

Multilingual Support: AI-powered language tools will assist in handling calls in various Indian languages, making the service more accessible.

Smart Dispatch Mechanism: Intelligent systems will help identify and deploy the nearest and most suitable ambulance, crane or patrol vehicle.

Proactive Alerts: Highway users may receive timely advisories regarding accidents, traffic disruptions and other important developments.

Improved Coordination: Better integration between the helpline, emergency-response agencies and highway operations teams is expected to reduce response times and improve service delivery.

IHMCL Invites Industry Participation

To develop the new platform, the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), a company promoted by NHAI, has invited Expressions of Interest (EOI) from companies and consortia for the design, development, deployment, operation and maintenance of the Next Generation 1033 Helpline and Call Centre.

The project seeks expertise in software development, digital platforms, 24×7 call-centre operations and emergency-response management. Companies working in sectors such as mobility and ride-hailing services, logistics, quick commerce, public safety solutions, Computer-Aided Dispatch systems, Voice AI and Indian-language speech-recognition technologies have been encouraged to participate.

Industry Feedback to Shape the Platform

IHMCL will also engage with industry experts to gather technical inputs and recommendations before finalising the platform’s requirements. The agency plans to incorporate relevant industry best practices to ensure that the system is scalable, reliable and future-ready.

The proposed upgrade is expected to make highway assistance services faster, more coordinated and more convenient for millions of travellers. By combining advanced technology with human oversight, NHAI aims to further strengthen road safety and enhance the travel experience on India’s National Highway network.
