Olympic medalist Bajrang Punia, who recently joined the Congress party, has received death threats. The threat has been sent on WhatsApp from a foreign number. The anonymous threat mentioned that Bajrang should leave Congress or else it will not be good for him and his family. “This is our last message”, the threat letter warned. As per report, on receiving the same, Bajrang Punia lodged a complaint at Bahalgarh police station in Sonipat.

Wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia had entered into politics amidst the Haryana assembly polls by joining the Congress party in Delhi on Friday. Before officialy joining the party, both the wrestlers had met Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge at his residence.

After joining the Congress, Vinesh Phogat had said that there will be an effort to live up to the expectations. “Congress understood our tears. In bad times, you come to know who is yours. This is an opportunity to serve the people of the country. The beginning of a new innings is a matter of pride for me, “she had said. While Congress fielded Phogat to contest from Julana assembly constituency, Bajrang has been made the working chairman of the All India Congress Kisan.

Phogat said the BJP was supporting Singh while the Congress supported the protesting wrestlers when they “were being dragged on the roads” in Delhi.

Bajrang Punia said that the duo wrestlers would strengthen the Congress and the country. “BJP did not stand with us but Congress did” he added. The duo wrestlers had faced criticism from BJP for joining the Congress.

Punia and Phogat were part of the protest over sexual harassment allegations against former BJP MP and then Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh in 2023.
