The PM-eBus Sewa Scheme, implemented by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), aims to strengthen urban transport systems through the deployment of 10,000 air‑conditioned electric buses across Indian cities. The scheme covers urban areas with populations between 3 and 40 lakh, clusters of adjoining smaller statutory towns, and State capitals—including those in the North‑Eastern and hilly regions—with populations under 3 lakh.

The initiative is expected to introduce organised public transport in nearly 30% of participating cities and enable close to 80% of them to transition to e‑mobility for the first time. The scheme has drawn an overwhelming response, supported by comprehensive infrastructure assistance, including 100% financial support for Behind‑the‑Meter (BTM) power infrastructure. Over 200 infrastructure proposals—covering both civil depots and power systems—have been sanctioned, alongside the entire demand for 10,000 e‑buses. Sanctions include more than 500 circuit kilometres of high‑tension power lines and depot construction across more than 300 acres of land.

Till December 2025, a total of Rs 1,254.38 crore has been sanctioned for BTM and civil depot infrastructure, of which Rs 483.70 crore has already been spent.

Under the scheme, all 10,000 buses have been allocated across 116 cities in 20 states and six Union Territories. The state-wise sanction includes: Assam (100), Andaman & Nicobar Islands (45), Andhra Pradesh (1,050), Arunachal Pradesh (50), Bihar (400), Chhattisgarh (240), Gujarat (750), Goa (50), Haryana (450), Himachal Pradesh (50), Karnataka (750), Kerala (293), Madhya Pradesh (972), Maharashtra (1,609), Manipur (50), Meghalaya (55), Odisha (400), Punjab (447), Rajasthan (1,150), Uttarakhand (137), Telangana (151), Chandigarh (428), Jammu & Kashmir (200), Ladakh (48), Puducherry (75), and Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu (50).

While MoHUA does not maintain direct records on employment generated—since bus and depot construction is managed by individual cities—the scheme is estimated to create between 45,000 and 55,000 direct jobs over its duration.

A total of Rs 10.48 crore has been sanctioned for BTM power and civil depot works, including a major (“mother”) sanction of Rs 8.40 crore.
