Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Saturday targeted the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He said descendants of those who rejected Constitution were celebrating and defending it today. Terming it as a victory, Tharoor said that ancestors of RSS had rejected the Constitution from its root to branch, saying that it was written in the wrong language and contained Western ideas.
Speaking at the launch of his book ‘Our Living Constitution’, the Congress MP said that both society and Constitution are evolving. We are gradually seeing inclusion of constitutional values and morality in social fabric of India.
He further said that today people associated with Hindutva movement were the most staunch supporters and protectors of Constitution. The Prime Minister has also said that it is the only holy book of government. Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat has also pledged support and loyalty to the Constitution and talked about protecting it.
Descendants of RSS are taking the oath of Constitution today
Congress MP Tharoor further said earlier RSS ancestors rejected the Constitution saying that it was full of Western ideas and lacked Indianness, but today their intellectual ideological descendants take the oath of the Constitution and defend it. Tharoor said that this is a sign that they have also evolved and society is also moving forward. He said that decisions have changed, our interpretations have changed with 106 amendments and this is actually the strength of our Constitution.
Common Indians are understanding the value-morality of the Constitution
Tharoor, MP from Thiruvananthapuram, admitted that many things had gone wrong in the country. It may get even worse in the future. He argued that one of the things that was going right is that common Indians have now started understanding the value, morality and aspirations of Constitution. He said that it was a great victory that the party whose ancestors were against the Constitution was celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Constitution today.
Described various parts of the Constitution in the book
Tharoor has described various parts of the Constitution in his book, starting with its preamble and then explaining its historical roots. The book explores the civic nationalism that inspired the founders of India, which filled the Constitution with progressiveness, pluralism, tolerance, liberalism and concern for the individual. Former Congress leader and lawyer Kapil Sibal, Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra, former Supreme Court judge Madan Lokur and columnist Shubhrashta were also present at the event.
