Roughly one in four registered organ‑transplant hospitals in the country failed to report mandatory data to the National Registry Portal in 2025, according to official figures. Of the 804 hospitals authorised to perform organ transplantation, 217 did not submit data, triggering provisions under the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act (THOTA), 1994. The respective State governments must initiate regulatory action against such hospitals.
The National Organ and Tissue Transplant Registry Portal—operational since 2015—is accessible to authorised institutions via the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) website.
As of March 3, 2026, the national waitlist for major organs has risen to 89,839, based on data uploaded by hospitals and transplant centres. In contrast, the total number of organ transplants performed in 2025 was 20,019, highlighting a continuing gap between demand and availability.
To strengthen the country’s transplant ecosystem, the Centre is implementing the National Organ Transplant Programme (NOTP), a Central Sector Scheme aimed at improving infrastructure and boosting public awareness on organ donation. Under the programme, Regional (ROTTOs) and State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organizations (SOTTOs) have been set up across the Northern (excluding Ladakh), Eastern, and North‑Eastern regions (excluding Manipur and Nagaland), expanding institutional capacity for coordination and oversight.
