Creating new records in history of Lok Sabha polls, the just concluded 18th Lok Sabha elections witnessed setting up of new winning benchmarks by candidates of BJP, Congress and TMC in the top 10 list of highest winning margins in Lok Sabha, since independence. The polls also witnessed the least winning margin by which a candidate won the parliamentary elections.
As per records, the new record for the highest margin of victory in Lok Sabha elections ever now belongs to Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) sitting Member of Parliament (MP) from Indore, Shankar Lalwani, who polled a whopping 12,26,751 votes while his nearest rival Sanjay Solanki of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) managed to secure just 51,659 votes. This made Lalwani win by an all time high winning margin of 11,75,092 votes in Lok Sabha history.
The 18th Lok Sabha gave four new rankings of highest winning margin ever. However, in top 10 list, a total of seven positions were bagged by the saffron party while one each was secured by candidates of Congress, TMC and CPI (M).
For the second highest winning margin, Congress candidate Rakibul Hussain from Dhubri parliamentary constituency of Assam secured the second highest winning margin of in Lok Sabha election ever of 10,12,476 votes. He polled 14,71,885 votes as against his nearest rival Mohd Badruddin of All-India United Democratic Front, who secured 4,59,409 votes.
For the third highest winning margin, former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan of BJP won with 8,21,408 margin of votes from Vidisha constituency in MP. Chauhan had polled 11,16,460 votes while his nearest rival Pratap Bhanu Sharma of Congress secured 2,95,052 votes.
After 2019 Lok Sabha polls, once again BJP’s C.R. Patil won by a record fourth highest margin of 7,73,551 lakh votes from Navasari parliamentary constituency in Gujarat. Patil had polled 10,31,065 votes as against his nearest rival Nishadbhai Bhupatbhai Desai of Congress, who secured 2,57,514 votes.
Union Home minister Amit Shah won with fifth highest winning margin of 7,44,716 votes in Lok Sabha history from Gandhinagar parliamentary constituency in Gujarat. Amit Shah had polled 10,10,972 votes while his nearest rival Sonal Ramabhai Patel of Congress had secured 2,66,256 votes.
However, the sixth spot on the top 10 light of highest winning margins was bagged by Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate Abhishek Banerjee who won by 7,10,930 votes from Diamond Harbour constituency in West Bengal.
Further, the seventh highest winning margin in Lok Sabha history was witnessed in a bypoll in Maharashtra’s Beed constituency in 2014 where BJP’s Pritam Munde had won by 6.96 lakh votes while BJP candidate CR Patil in 2019 had won from Navsari constituency in Gujarat with eighth highest winning margin of 6,89,668 votes.
For the ninth highest ever winning margin of 5,92,502 votes, CPI (M) candidate Anil Basu had won from Arambagh constituency in West Bengal in 2004 elections.
Meanwhile, BJP candidate Narendra Modi in his maiden attempt in Lok Sabha polls had made history by registering a win from Vadodara parliamentary constituency in Gujarat in 2014 with 5,70,128 votes, the tenth highest winning tally since independence in Lok Sabha history.
Minimum Winning Margin
In the closest fight in 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Shiv Sena candidate Ravindra Dattaram Waikar defeated Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate Amol Gajanan Kirtikar by a mere 48 votes in Mumbai North West constituency. Waikar had polled 4,52,644 votes as against Kirtikar who polled 4,52,596 votes.
Narendra Modi to equal record of Pandit Nehru
The final results of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections arrived with several new records as INDIA bloc reached an impressive figure of 232 seats. With Prime Minister Narendra Modi all set for a third term, oath taking ceremony of which is likely to be held on June 8, he will equal the record of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru for making government for a third consecutive term.
