In 17th Lok Sabha, 240 bills introduced, 222 passed, 45 passed on same day, every MP asked an average 165 questions

A total of 222 bills were passed in the current Lok Sabha and 45 of these were approved on the day they were introduced in the House. This was revealed in an analysis by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR). The bills which were approved on the day they were introduced in the lower house include the Appropriation (Vote on Account) Bill, the Appropriation Bill, the Jammu and Kashmir Appropriation (Second) Bill, the Central Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2023 and the Election Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2021.

The report prepared by ADR on the basis of analysis sheds light on functioning of 17th Lok Sabha and its members.

As per the report, a total of 240 bills were introduced during 17th Lok Sabha, of which 222 were passed. Additionally, 11 Bills were withdrawn and six are pending. Data revealed, 45 Bills were passed on the same day they were introduced in the House. As per the report, on an average, an MP asked 165 questions and attended 189 of the total 273 sittings in 17th Lok Sabha.

Maximum and Minimum average attendance of MPs

MPs from Chhattisgarh had the highest average attendance. The state’s 11 representatives in the Lower House attended 216 of the 273 sittings while Arunachal Pradesh had the lowest average attendance, with its two MPs attending only 127 sittings. The analysis also sheds light on the level of engagement between states and political parties.

MPs from Maharashtra were the most vocal, with 48 representatives asking an average of 315 questions. In contrast, each MP from Manipur asked an average of 25 questions.

NCP with maximum questions being asked

Among parties, the Nationalist Congress Party led the way with its five MPs raising an average of 410 questions. On the other hand, two members of Apna Dal (Sonelal) asked an average of five questions each. Telugu Desam Party (TDP) members attended 229 of the 273 meetings. Aam Aadmi Party members had the lowest attendance and attended an average of 57 meetings.

The report also names the 10 MPs who actively participated in parliamentary proceedings and asked the maximum number of questions. West Bengal’s Balurghat MP Sukanta Majumdar topped the list by asking 596 questions in 17th Lok Sabha.
