In line with the Government of India’s vision of “Sahkar se Samriddhi”, the Ministry of Cooperation has expanded the cooperative movement into the mobility sector with the launch of Bharat Taxi, a multi‑state cooperative platform designed to offer a democratic, driver‑owned alternative to conventional aggregator models. Registered on June 6, 2025 under the Multi‑State Cooperative Societies Act, 2002, the platform has been established by eight national‑level cooperative institutions with the objective of strengthening collective ownership and ensuring fair, transparent and affordable mobility services for citizens.
Bharat Taxi operates on a cooperative structure in which drivers and vehicle owners function as members and stakeholders, participating directly in governance. A Board of Directors elected by the members oversees the platform’s functioning, with two elected driver representatives ensuring that driver concerns remain central to operational policy. The model enables driver‑members to retain their entire fare earnings—after statutory deductions—by eliminating commission‑based charges typically imposed by private aggregators.
The platform has been developed to provide transparent fare structures, technology‑enabled ride booking, GPS‑based vehicle tracking, digital payments and accessible customer support. It emphasises affordable mobility for all sections of society, including low‑income and marginalized groups, while promoting fair income opportunities, social security measures and dignified working conditions for driver‑members. Fare determination is undertaken by the cooperative society itself, based on operational costs and market conditions, with periodic reviews to maintain transparency.
Bharat Taxi is currently functional in Delhi NCR—covering Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Faridabad and Ghaziabad—and in the Gujarat cities of Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Somnath and Dwarka. The cooperative plans a phased expansion to Tier‑2 and Tier‑3 cities, extending services up to tehsil levels across the country over the next three years to widen access to affordable and cooperative‑based mobility services.
Built on a technology‑enabled framework, Bharat Taxi is interoperable with the ONDC network, allowing its services to be discoverable on platforms such as DigiHaat, Bob Rides and OneTicket. Any ONDC‑integrated mobility platform can access Bharat Taxi’s supply upon due approval. The cooperative has also partnered with fintech providers and financial institutions for digital payments, banking support and insurance services for drivers.
As of March 1, 2026, Bharat Taxi has 21.34 lakh registered users and 2.31 lakh registered Sarathis (driver‑members), marking rapid growth within months of launch and signaling strong adoption of cooperative‑based mobility across urban and emerging markets.
