4.9-Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Uttarakhand, Tremors Felt in Delhi-NCR

A 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck Uttarakhand on Tuesday night, sending tremors across several parts of northern India, including Delhi-NCR, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana.

According to the National Center for Seismology, the earthquake occurred around 10:15 p.m. Its epicentre was in Chamoli district at a depth of 13 km.

The tremors were felt in Delhi as well as Noida, Gurugram and several other areas. Residents reported brief but noticeable shaking, with some people stepping out of their homes and gathering in open spaces as a precaution.

People also took to social media to share their experiences, with reports of tremors coming from places as far as Shimla.

Supreme Court advocate Avani Bansal said on X that she felt her couch and the entire building shake in Delhi’s Safdarjung Enclave.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or property damage following the earthquake.

The quake was initially reported to have a magnitude of 4.4. However, the National Center for Seismology later revised its magnitude to 4.9.
