In a significant stuep towards implementing the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad (UP Board) has developed a new set of question papers for History, Civics, Geography and Economics for Classes 11 and 12.
The redesigned question papers seek to move beyond rote learning and assess students on a broader range of competencies, including conceptual understanding, analytical and critical thinking, application of knowledge, problem-solving abilities, logical expression and higher-order thinking skills.
For the first time, subject experts from the State Institute of Education have prepared model question papers aimed at encouraging students to understand concepts and apply reasoning rather than rely on memorisation. The papers are designed to provide opportunities for learners to analyse evidence and sources, compare different viewpoints and present arguments supported by logical reasoning.
UP Board Secretary Bhagwati Singh said a comprehensive strategy had been formulated to develop balanced question papers that ensure a holistic, multidimensional and competency-based assessment of students. The newly prepared papers have been designed in accordance with this approach, he added.
Recently, Rajendra Pratap, Principal of the State Institute of Education, presented a copy of the compiled question paper collection to the UP Board Secretary. The initiative is expected to bring the state’s assessment system in line with the standards promoted by PARAKH (Performance Assessment, Review and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development), the national assessment centre established under NEP 2020.
Officials believe the move marks a major shift in the evaluation process, focusing on students’ understanding, reasoning and application of knowledge rather than their ability to memorise textbook content. The competency-based model is also expected to better prepare students for real-world problem-solving and analytical challenges while promoting deeper learning outcomes in schools across the state.
