According to sources, the Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh filed formal complaints against 105 lawyers at the Civil Lines police station, alleging they obtained enrolment as advocates using fake degrees and marksheets. The alleged irregularities came to light during a verification exercise of educational records conducted with various universities.
In a complaint submitted to the police, Bar Council secretary R.K. Shukla stated that the verification campaign was initiated following an Allahabad High Court order dated June 3, which directed an inquiry into the educational qualifications and records of advocates registered with the council.
During scrutiny, several degrees and marksheets were allegedly found to be forged. Acting on the complaints lodged by the Bar Council, the Civil Lines police registered FIRs against multiple advocates on Monday.
The accused lawyers are from several districts, including Prayagraj, Kaushambi and Pratapgarh, as well as other parts of Uttar Pradesh.
Sources said the Bar Council had issued notices to the advocates concerned after discrepancies were detected and sought their explanations. However, no satisfactory responses have reportedly been received so far.
Officials at the Civil Lines police station confirmed they had received complaints from the Bar Council naming a large number of individuals and that further action was underway. Authorities indicated that additional FIRs could be lodged as the verification process continues.
