Ashwin surpassed Kumble’s record of 350-test wickets to beome the highest wicket taker on Indian soil in Test cricket. On Sunday, playing against England in the fourth test in Ranchi, Ravi Chandran Ashwin achieved the feat with 354 text wickets tucked neatly under his belt in 59 tests.
In the fourth test, he dismissed Ollie Pope of England in second innings of the fourth test to reach the top spot apart from Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Ben Fox and James Anderson. In the first innings of the fourth test Ashwin took four wickets while in the second innings of the match he managed a five-wicket haul.
He has left behind legendary Indian bowlers Anil Kumble (350 wickets in 63 matches), Harbhajan Singh (265 in 55), Kapil Dev (219 in 65) and Ravindra Jadeja (211 in 43).
Ashwin is also the only Indian to have taken 100 wickets in Test cricket against England. Today’s feat was also against England in Ranchi Test .
Recently joined 500 test wicket club
Ravichandran Ashwin had recently joined the 500-wicket club in test cricket and is presently the ninth highest wicket taker in test cricket with 507 wickets in 99 test matches and 187 innings. Sri Lankan spinner Muthaiah Muralitharan is presently the highest test wicket taker in world with 800 wickets in 133 tests and 230 innings.
Ashwin five positions behind Kumble in world ranking
Ace Indian spinner Anil Kumble’s record on Indian soil of maximum test wicket taker was surpassed by fellow mate right handed off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. But the latter is still five positions behind Anil Kumble in world ranking.
Widely regarded as one of the best leg spin bowlers in Test Cricket history, Kumble took 619 wickets in Test cricket and is the fourth highest wicket taker of all time as of 2022.
